Promoting British Values

So how do we promote fundamental British Values at our School?

At the heart of what we do is to be actively inclusive.  We are proud that children from all backgrounds, faiths and cultures attend our school.  Whilst we follow a broadly Anglican tradition in our statutory Collective Worship, we celebrate other faiths and festivals from around the world.

We also believe that Fundamental British Values can be taught through a good Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE&C) curiculum and through good Religious Education (RE). To do this we use SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) materials and Discovery RE.  These materials also help us develop children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.

Our broader curriculum also excites and engages children so that they are prepared for the next stage in their education and beyond into the world of work so that they take their place in positively contributing to society.  Addionally, we give our children a secure understanding of the past and how that has influenced the British Values that are held dear in our society.

Children also have a say in how our school is run through being elected to our school council.  This reflects the democracy in which we live.

The school recognises its duties under the Prevent Strategy and we are training our staff to be aware and respond to any at risk of radicalisation.

Finally, we challenge children, staff, parents and governors if they ever present views contrary to Fundamental British Values and the values of our school - we will not tolerate the intolerable.

What are British Values?

The Department for Education requires schools to uphold the 'Fundamental British Values' of:

  • Democracy;
  • The rule of law;
  • Individual Liberty; and
  • Mutual respect and tolerence of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Our own values and ethos support fully Fundamental British Values.

We ensure that our children are explicitly taught about and experience  Fundamental British Values in a variety of ways.
